I wrote this piece while riding on my bicycle, on the east bay of my beloved Bay area (San Francisco). There is a nature preserve called Coyote Hills at the east end of the "Dumbarton Bridge". I used to go to bike riding with some good friends and one day the melody came to my head. It was in 1984. The bike ride had up hills, down hills, very peaceful settings with lots of birds and water, and this song is a tribute to that place.

I always liked Flamenco music, although I never studied it technically or otherwise, but somehow this melody came about. So I guess it is true that: "You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy."

This song, "El Borlo" is just like the dance hall parties that I used to sneak into, in Tijuana, when I was a teenager. The bands that played had horns. Some of them did James Brown music, others played what it was called then "Musica Tropical." This is before it was called "Salsa." So this is my party song. The arrangement that Allan Phillips wrote is a killer, and everybody played great in it.

Carlos Santana was so generous and kind and provided me with one of his "Signature Model Guitar" made by Paul Reed Smith. I got it when I was in New York City, so sitting in my Hotel room, looking out my window to Central Park and Manhattan, I thought about urban blues and life in the city.

Out on a gig on Tucson, Arizona, with "The Jazz Pigs," in 1994. I was jammin' with the conga player in the Hotel room, before the gig. I came up with original chords then, and when I got back to San Diego I wrote the melody. About four months later, I wrote the lyrics. When I started working at Professional Sound and Music, I met one of my favorite human beings int this world, Lenny Blake, and he came up with the interlude. I finished it in 1995.

(Song for Carlos Santana) One of my favorite songs by Carlos is "Samba pa' ti." This is my gift to him, for a lifetime of inspiration.

Meeting the legendary Pharoah Sanders in 1997 was a great honor and a thrill for me. I got to engage in a conversation with a quiet and proud man. I will never forget it, and this one song is thinking of him.

I wrote this song for my son Danial, whom I love and miss very much. I was honored that Karl Perazzo agreed to do the singing. The chorus at the end, sung in spanish, tells it all: it is a story of a father longing for his son and the heaviness in the father's heart that will be lifted when the son returns.
